<image:title>collaborations - For these vibrant Spring 2013 pillows, West Elm was going for a Mexican inspired theme. The first idea we played with was a cacti print. As I was working on it, the results felt too expected so I started playing with birds and flowers, loosely inspired by a talavera plant pot from my childhood I stole from my mom’s house. The colors are vivid like traditional Mexican candy and the houses of Luis Barragán</image:title>

<image:title>collaborations - For this beautiful project, I was approached by MAP, the Museum of Popular Arts located in Mexico City, to participate on the third installment of “Artesano entre Artista”, where traditional Mexican artisans pair with designers or artists to create a new take on objects using traditional artisanal techniques. <image:title>collaborations - In the summer of 2015, I travelled to Chiapas, Mexico to collaborate with 3 different indigenous communities, through Aid to Artisans, creating clothing pieces and handbags that utilized their traditional techniques in a new shape or manner. <image:title>collaborations - In 2009, I was approached by Dr. Fernando Díaz Barriga to collaborate on a project seeking gender equality through self-reliance in a marginalized community located in the Huasteca Potosina, Mexico. The women of this indigenous community lacked school education and artisanal tradition. We created opportunity by building a project that started with simple pillow designs of local fauna. A select group of women received training and they in turn trained more women. The group formed a small business called “Tecilli”, which means cocoon in Náhuatl.</image:title>

<image:title>collaborations - In 2008, while I was working at kate spade, Tha Nature Conservancy approached us to collaborate in the wonderful collective exhibit Design for a Living World. Ten prominent designers were invited to work with natural raw materials in order to illuminate their complexity and vitality at the source, including the people and cultures that actually produce them. For this project, representing kate spade, I designed 3 bags and traveled to Bolivia to work with local artisans to produce them. The exhibit was photographed by Ami Vitale, who traveled around the world to document the many landscapes, people, and their craftsmanship.</image:title>

<image:title>studio work - For our 2008 Spring Collection, we wanted an ad campaign that would play off the bold, graphic, and colorful products. A cheerful Soap Box Derby spring weekend was perfect for it. The campaign was shot by the wonderful Tim Walker; we worked closely with his team to align the color palettes of the set to accentuate those of the collection.</image:title>

<image:title>studio work - This is one of my favorite projects I have ever designed. The project started as little kids’ coloring postcards. When Andy Spade saw the illustrations I had created, he suggested we use them in a china pattern. This was 2005, early on in my career, and this project opened up more opportunities for me to get involved in home design at kate spade.</image:title>

<image:title>studio work - I collaborated with Matt Singer, Creative Director at Jack Spade at the time, to create this agenda. Matt’s ideas were often so far out, I wasn’t always sure I could make them work, we would sit together, brainstorm and sketch, and I was always happy where we ended. In this planner, we follow a monkey through his daily activities. The agenda came with a sticker to mark your plans on specific dates.</image:title>

<image:title>studio work - Laurie DeMartino and I designed these cafeteria cups for Target in 1999 when I worked at her studio. The brief called for a fun and lively design to have at all the cafeterias in the country for sodas and coffee. I was exploring with a whimsical and somewhat messy line-art illustration style that Laurie liked for the project and we ended up using. The client loved the exact design we presented. This was my first job in the US, so it was pretty cool to see these cups all over the country.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - A recent trip to Peru inspired these illustrations. The rich culture is present everywhere, from the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, full of symbols and shadow plays with nature, to the traditional indigenous costumes, rich in color, shapes and textures. With all these impressions in my head, I sat down to paint at a coffee shop in Lima on the last day and just allowed all of them to mix.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - An early March morning laying in bed, a few days after leaving my job, I saw a clear image of a snake after I finished a new meditation.    The image was comforting and I kept it with me, playing with potential meanings for it. A week later, I went on a trip to Portugal, where I started noticing snakes all around me. The beauty and colors of the tiles, the packaging, desserts, (and pretty much everything Portuguese) influenced these snake illustrations, which I painted during the trip.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - Visiting Seville in the spring is quite a feast for the senses. The trees are full of oranges and the streets smell of orange blossom. Tapas and salmorejo in all its forms, are the perfect reason to eat every second, and the Moorish-influenced architecture is breath-taking. The colors, shapes, and scents of Seville inspired these illustrations.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - I started dancing tango a year ago and soon became completely obsessed. A few months later, I was spending every other night dancing at a milonga. When I visited Lisbon in the spring and went to a local milonga, I brought my sketchbook as an experiment (taking advantage of my anonymity). My experiment resulted in new tango friendships and these sketches are now memories of the lovely nights I spent in Lisbon.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - Oaxaca is one of those places where human craft and its relationship with nature are part of everyday life. Tortillas are made on the spot before your eyes, grasshoppers are a popular snack, and you can smell cacao being ground in the market for hot chocolate. On my last trip, I had the opportunity to visit artist Pantaleón Ruiz, who works with natural pigments, and invited me to explore at his studio. I made these pieces in his backyard using “azúl añil” and “grana”.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - I made these in late 2016, at one of Peter Hristoff’s fabulous Drawing Marathons. It was the end of the day and we had been drawing non stop since the morning. We were all submerged in our work and also very tired. I took a deep look at all the models in one of their last poses, and saw there was something so soft, vulnerable, and generous in their expressions and body gestures that I tried to capture in an intimate manner.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - I made these pieces on the first drawing marathon I took with Peter Hristoff in the Summer of 2010. I was feeling a bit stressed at work, missing getting messy and experimenting without a particular objective. I spent a long weekend in the Berkshires, painting the same 4 lovely models alongside people I’d never met for 8 hours straight. I still really love these pieces as I can feel the beautiful environment they were created in when I look at them.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - These silkscreen prints are inspired by memories of an amazing place called Chiconcuac, where I spent almost every weekend of my childhood. Our house “Eco-Cali”, consisted of two palapas that we shared with our cousins. The days were long and there was not much to do other than make piñatas, string figures and friendship bracelets, swim in the green pool (at one point inhabited by toads), and listen to my mom’s wild stories on the walk to town. Those were great days.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - D. Wylie and I met over email in the summer of 2001, while we were designers working at Duffy (I in Minneapolis and he in NY). Our common friend Gen thought we would hit it off and made the connection. We finally met in the fall, when he came to spend a week in the Minneapolis office after the tragic events of 9/11. I thought he looked like a Monkey, he thought I looked like a Mushroom and we fell in love. Since we lived far apart, I would make these simple illustrations and send them to him. When we broke up, I illustrated the whole story as some form of therapy.</image:title>

<image:title>personal work - I started drawing people in pools during the time I lived in Minneapolis and picked up swimming again to help deal with the long winters. <image:title>personal work - I moved to NY in 2003 after about 4 years of living in Minneapolis. It was a lonely time, I had a huge longing for a home, but somehow I felt I no longer really had one. Going to Mexico City was tough, my mom still cried every time we said goodbye at the airport and sitting on the plane I wondered what I was doing with my life. This little book is about airports, the anonymous place between places where we carry our stories, our longings, our fears.</image:title>

      <image:title>About - Hello,</image:title>
<image:caption>Thank you for visiting. I am a multidisciplinary Creative Director living and working in New York. Born and raised in Mexico City, I moved to the US after graduating from university. I have experience leading teams at top agencies such as Mother and Jones Knowles Ritchie, as well as internal teams at prestigious companies such as the mission driven Bombas, Refinery29, Victoria’s Secret Beauty, Plated, and Kate Spade. As a leader, I focus on integrity, mentorship, inclusion, and building trust. At these companies, I have not only shaped the work, but guided future leaders to lead by example. Outside of my full time roles, I have been very involved with education since early on in my career. I often lecture and lead case studies at the Global Fashion Management masters program at FIT in New York and CENTRO in Mexico City. I have also taught at MCAD in Minneapolis and SVA in New York.
